How to interpret company contract-award data

Company contract summaries show records matched to a company in this dataset, not a complete account of its business. A reported award amount is not necessarily money spent, company revenue or a new contract. Read the date range, coverage note and individual record before drawing a conclusion.

  1. Find the company

Open a company profile and look for its federal-activity summary and recent contract awards. Missing awards do not prove that a company has no government business.

  2. Read the summary in context

Check matched award count, reported amount, award dates. Keep contract-award data separate from disclosed fundraising figures.

  3. Open the relevant records

Use the award links or the company’s View all action. Review the agency, award date, identifier and description. Use the record’s public reference when available; do not infer details that are not recorded.

  4. Compare like with like

Use the same date window and amount definition when comparing companies. A large reported amount may have a different meaning from an obligation or expenditure; avoid treating selected matched records as a market-wide ranking.
